I’m grateful to MAIZE | H-FARM Innovation colleagues for this post, bringing once again the attention to the need of having a long term (sometimes dreaming!) strategic vision. They use the anecdote of the “cathedrals”, but this story can be told in various ways. Nevertheless the end point is only one: doing an effort now accepting that someone in the future will gain the benefit! Think about this, think about tomorrow, think about your children, think about tomorrow of tomorrow (the children of your children) when someone is asking you why you are investing time, energy and money in environmental friendly actions that cost effort today and produce a small (or close to zero) immediate result. Think about this when you take every daily decision!

These must-read titles unpack the histories that shaped architecture and design today.

I have read Filipa's rich and thought provoking book from cover to cover, and am truly inspired. The book sets out a radical new approach to conceptualising the temporal dimension in the city, how urban designers can understand and engage with the sense of time in the city, and why this is relevant and important. It engenders a new perspective for urban design, that focuses on how rhythms of activities, nature and space affect our perception of time and space, and with it, have direct implications for our well being in the city and the sense of place. It establishes parallels to musical theory, which are both enlightening and intuitively understandable. The rhythms of a place can pull us into their orbit, the same way as a great piece of music can. The book also explores ways by which we can identify, map and record place rhythms, and it includes an outlook on how we as urban designers can influence place temporality. I have seen Filipa working really hard on this book, and I can only say, congratulations! Very well done, a massive new contribution to urban design theory and practice!
